During Berlin Fashion Week 2013, art house SomoS’ presents ALTER ANGLE, an exhibition that takes a look at fashion through the lens of art.
SomoS places the spotlight on a selection of artworks that address the themes of identity, fashion and self-representation, complemented by finessed design pieces that exemplify the vibrancy of self-expression that is characteristic of Berlin’s creative underground, its sexual outsiders and extreme club culture; exposing some shared roots and interests.
The art works include the Exactitudes: tribal fashion statements ethnographically documented over the course of many years by Rotterdam based artists Ari Versluis & Ellie Uyttenbroek; representations of uncompromising DIY ways of personal reinvention (inspired by the Cockettes, Warhol Superstars and Leigh Bowery) salvaged from the queer and transsexual underground by noted Berlin photographer and filmmaker J.Jackie Baier; and works chosen from Tania Shcheglova’s & Roman Noven’s (Synchrodogs) and Bobby Collins’ diverse photographic oeuvre that present us with imagery from fashion’s fraying edges, where there is room for deeply personal and challengingly eccentric ways of self expression. Christa Joo Hyun D’Angelo works “reveal the structure of commercial seduction”, her collages constitute an intimate reaction to the world of luxury/fashion advertising. Japanese textile expert, curator and artist Walter Bruno Brix creates art pieces using physical fashion garments to comment on gender, sexuality and history. Finally, in their collages, Tulip Enterprises juxtapose both male and female gestures of self-presentation, and Eastern European female fashion with U.S.American male erotica.
These artists invite us to think of fashion and self presentation in a radically different way, far removed from consumerism and instead more connected to the realization of deeply personal, social, psychological and sexual needs.
The designers segment presents innovative fashion and accessories by Chaca, Aurelia Paumelle; Sadak, Simone Rainer, Grosser Heinrich and Tata Christiane.
Curated by Justin Ross and SomoS.
